I was thinking of just taking out the engine and dropping it off at the machine shop and have them rebuild it...is that even possible?

If not, then exactly what part of the rebuild process does the machine shop do? Or rather what part of the rebuilding job cant they do?

Even though this next question is something you dont have to answer if you cant, it would be nice if i got the info; in engine rebuilding, what is the rundown of things that needs to be done besides the things that can be done by the machine shop??

If its relevant, my problem is low oil pressure, engine tapping/ticking. Did a compression test and all cylinders produced 150psi (except cylinder #1 which was 145psi) so overall, things are good in that area. So the above question/s is assuming i am to rebuild the engine due to bearings. Car is 03 buick lesabre 3800 v6

Thanks a mill for your inputs guys!

The 3800 is about the best motor as far as dependable that Buick has made .if you have low oil pressure that will make the lifter make a tapping noise , they will be collapsed , if you drive it very far it will wear out the cam and ever moving part in the motor . You need to put a oil pump in the motor before you ruin the motor if it hasn't already happened . As far as what can a machine shop do to a motor the answer is anything if you have it rebuilt that would be your best bet they will mic everything to assure proper clearance and torque everything to manufacture specs you will have a brand new motor . You should call around and find a machine shop.that is reasonable have them write down everything they are going to do to the motor and what parts they are going to supply . Then call around see how much the parts cost and the parts that you have to buy (if any they should be able to supply all parts) and then call about a jasper motor .compare price and warranty , then make the right decision according to if the car is worth that kind of money or not .hope this helps you and good luck . Oh and get some reference's on the machine shop . Jasper motors are available at advanced auto , auto zone , Murray's auto , very well built motors reasonable price great warranty !!!!!!!!!

if youve decided you cant do the work, or tools are an issue, youll want a private mechanic to do the work. the machine shop can do the whole build, but it would be godawful expensive.

you really just need to figure out whats wrong and what path you want to use to fix the problem.

i found this engine used in the tulsa area for $550 and i pull it. i opted for a new crank because my sisters was not repairable. it just made economic sense. i had done the upper engine a few yrs prior, so the weak link was the lower. the only benefit to a used engine was for me, was hopefully the crank wasnt shot...

like i posted before, i did all the work except having the rod trued. machinist did that. i use this guy several times a year. anyway he got me a crank and bearings for dirt cheap. i walked out with mains rods seals, timing tensioner, etc for around $370 or so. all told i spent $570 on this repair.

6 months down the road, it runs beautiful and doesnt leak, knock or smoke.

just get another engine and drop it in. Rebuilding that engine is not worth the time or money.
