In short....yes. It's called a computer programmer. Most can be had under $500 that can adjust and/or remove various electronic nannies. I'm sure there's a company out there somewhere that makes one for your application.

That being said, 5,000 RPM is kind of odd. Most Ford cars from that era have two different rev limiters. The "Park" limiter is usually about 4,100 or so RPM. The car will not rev higher than that while stationary. I feel like this is not what you're referring to though. More likely, you're referring to the limiter that governs the upshifts etc. Your engine can easily exceed 5,000 RPM even if it is the basic Vulcan V6. It may not be good for it, but that engine will rev to about 6,000.

Since you say you have an SES(upper trim level on this Taurus), it's much more likely you have the performance engine, the 3.0 Duratec 24V V6. This engine is much happier at higher RPMs and will run at 5,500 all day if maintained right. So, if your engine is healthy, and you take care of it, just search for a :power programmer" for your car. Think HyperTech, SCT, Edge, Jet, etc. Google search it.

There were two different 3.0L V6 engines available on this car- most had the "Vulcan" 2v pushrod engine and some of the top-end models had the DOHC 4v version. The Vulcan V6 hits its 155hp peak at 4,950rpm and the DOHC version reaches the max 200hp at 5,650rpm. Based on that info, if this car has a 5000rpm limiter, it has the Vulcan V6. Aside from the fact that pushing it to 6500rpm would 'grenade' the engine very quickly, it would not result in quicker acceleration. Once you reach the peak output (at 4950rpm), you want it to shift to the next gear and start climbing toward the 4950/5000rpm mark again to achieve the best acceleration. Beyond that, this just isn't a performance engine and there's very little you can do to make it faster. It was actually designed to be the upgrade/optional engine for the original 1986 Taurus. In the post-2000 years, it was marketed as the entry-level Taurus engine comparable to the 4-cylinders standard in most competitors. It's reliable and makes adequate power, but it's not a high-performance engine and can't be made into one.

After asking if there is a way to get into your Taurus's ECM to reprogram the rev limiter as 5k RPM isn't enough as you want to up the limiter to at least 7k. Without pulling the engine to fortify it you could have a ticking bomb as the engine won't last long past 6k RPM as it was lucky you posted the question in repairs and maintenance as new questions would be on how to repair damage after the engine exploded.

Talking about $4,500 in engine upgrades to not grenade the motor at 6500 rpm. Crank is good for some added power, but is cast and will fail if you have any detonation.

Luckily, used motors for those turds (owned 2 of them) can be found with low miles for $200-$400 and you can throw $4,500 into as many of them as you want as junkyards are full of them in cars with blown transmissions...

Speaking of transmissions, what is your plan to not smoke your weak slushbox?

Budget another couple grand for a pile of transmissions and AAA to get you home to swap in a new one (assuming you have a shop space, skills, and tools to swap a tranny every couple thousand miles).

Basically, you could build a much faster car for much less that is 10x cooler, handles better, and isn't a ticking time bomb.

You can reprogram on a car's ECU to edit rev limiter on a computer.

good thing you posted this in maintenance and repairs - cause you would need some major repairs if you could (which you for the life of me cannot)

There are ships that do this cheaply! HOWEVER you will get more power easily by using either BOSCH or DENSO iridium plugs, and stick with MOBIL ONE 0W-30, the oil ALL FORD engines love. The FORD 3.0 is a torque enginer and NOT a high speed engine! it was made for ADEQUATE power and GREAT mileage to make the feds happy, and give you a long lasting powe train! The FORD ( read YAMAHA) SHO engien from years ago was SO VERY STRONG it would produce power to 9,000 RPM< but the ancillaries, l;ike ALTERNATOR< adn PWOER STEERING PUMP< could not take speed of that range!! if you want a HIGH REVIng engine, then look to JAPAN or EUROPE for anaswers! BMW, BENZ and AUDI can rev very high and prodcuce power all the way up!

If you want to burn your engine up go ahead. It is set because the engine is desighned to make power up to a certin rpm, then it lvls off. The parts are desighned around the redline so unless you plan on a nice rebuilt or new block don't do it.

The rev limiter is there to protect the motor. Not to just keep you from going fast.

Your engine would blow long before It hit 6500 RPM. You cant just change the limiter without upgrading major components like valves and timing.

best bet get about 60 grand and go buy a 2016 shelby with the 5.2 they redline at 8250 rpm

You can blow up the engine by exceeding the maximum engine speed. I blew up the engine of my top fuel dragster twice on the drag strip

They do it on motorcycles all the time.. But who would want to do this on a Ford Taurus is beond me after all it is not exactly a sports car to begin with.. Now on a Mustang GT you would be in luck..

How about 7500 rpm?

Some cars fly off the road. They are limited for several reasons.

You can get a programmer from summit racing.

"perfect for accelerating or even more." or wrecking your engine. You clearly know all about engines.
