I have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.7l v8 ho engine. I was given this truck from a friend that had engine trouble. Seems like it was a broken valve that hit the piston. The underside of the head is scoured up a bit. I was wondering if a machine shop would be able to smooth the head (repair) it so I can reuse it? What do you guys think? A new engine for this truck is a small fortune and I cant find anywhere that has just the heads for sale

like one said, a good shop can repair almost everything, but main thing they would check for is cracks and what not, also if you want to get a used head off another vehichle, i don't know where you live but theres a few locations of upullandpay.com and im going to get a head from them sometime and its only 40 dollards, but you have to pull the parts is why its probably cheap.

Salvage yard heads run from about 150 to 450 US dollars. That is going to be about the price for a rebuild. If you can find a sound head in the local yard, it might be cheaper to go this way instead of the rebuild. But if you just want to get the jeep back on the road and can live with a little drop in performance on one cylinder, just get a new valve, lapping compound and lap a new valve into the seat. If the machine shop just grinds out the marks, you will have lower compression in that cylinder any way. How well that head takes to weld build up is unknown to me.

In this case, a used head seems like the best choice.

OH guy are you being coated up for a rip-off.......... you could never REINSTALL HEAD GASKETS EVER IN ANY universal highway automobile. they're purely seeing how lots you already know or do no longer understand. you could no longer reuse the gaskets because of the fact they're in section metallic jewelry around some holes in the gasket. the 1st time you tighten the heads it crushes the gentle metallic to kind an honest seal. as quickly as overwhelmed you're executed.... Now white smoke means you're "burning" water. Black smoke could mean you're burning oil. greater contemporary automobiles use aluminum heads to save weight however the block in maximum automobiles continues to be iron to save funds. the project is that Aluminum expands greater desirable than iron with warmth; and the enhance is proportional to temperature so in case you overheat the engine the Aluminum strikes adequate greater desirable than the iron which you smash the seal on the top gasket. additionally the block is purely greater desirable and as a result greater suitable than the top so while the top expands too lots it gets warped by technique of being held tight on the cylinder head bolts. So in many situations you need to airplane off the cylinder head say thirty thousandths of an inch to get it flat lower back so the recent head gasket will seal. The cylinder head would desire to be cracked yet this would be a good distance much less effortless. The cracks in many situations kind around the valve classes. Valve classes are tubular inserts in many situations a softer copper alloy that the valves slide out and in on. in the event that they get loose from positioned on the valve does not close in precisely the final spot and you have have been given a situation. yet then with the valve classes you could purely pull the top and replace the classes. they're purely pressed into place - the handbook hollow in the top is particularly too small and friction holds them. the variety you tell in case you have have been given a crack is observed as MAGNAFLUX. You spray or wipe a undeniable liquid on a factor, wait a couple of minutes and wipe it off with a towel. The wonderful crack will draw up a tiny volume of the fluid by technique of capillary action. The trick is that the fluid glows awesome blue under a black easy ( UV easy) so which you're taking the particular easy and seem everywhere on the section. The undesirable spots are truly simple to discover. The block itself would desire to be cracked yet this is quite uncommon and springs from working the vehicle with truly low radiator water stages. Take care.

They can repair just about anything at a good machine shop. They should inspect the valve seats to make sure they are not loose or hammered out of round. Resurfacing the head is advised.

if the head is not hurt too bad then the machine shop can shave it and you can use it again. as long as the head is not cracked they should be able to shave it.
