your airflow for the engine cooling must be restricted reducing its capacity. Clean off the radiator and associated grill work if any.

Is the engine over heating or is it just getting a little warmer than usual? Most engines the normal operating temperature will fluctuate between about 190F to 225F. It is not considered over heated until the temperature gauge goes into the red area, usually between 240F to 250F.

First thing to look at is the radiator fan. On most modern vehicles this fan is electrically driven. Does the fan run when the engine gets warmer. With most engines with this setup the radiator fan will activate around 220F and will shut off around 215 to 210F. If this fan is not coming on this can cause an engine to run hot.

When was the last time you serviced the cooling system? You are supposed to flush the cooling system and replace the coolant every 3 years. A neglected cooling system will not cool efficiently. The passages inside the radiator will become blocked and the engine will run hot.

You may have a bad thermostat. If the first two suggestions do not help try replacing the thermostat.

If all of this does not help there is nothing wrong with admitting that you are in over your head. Bring the vehicle to a reputable independent mechanic for repairs.

Are your fans kicking in ? That is what it sounds like to me.

If you were constantly flying down the high way and the cool air was passing through the radiator it would stay cool. But if you are stopped in traffic and you notice the temp going up then obviously your fans are not kicking in. There are switches and sensors for this,, as soon as the sensor senses that the temperature is up, it kicks in your fans which keeps it to where it is suppose to be on the gauge.

So get the cooling system checked,, Fans, sensors, and switch !

Check the proper operation of the cooling fan. if the fan is not operating at the specified speed, this concern occurs. during that time you feel get vibrations in your vehicle

flush out the radiator. when the weather is cold then the cold air is what keeping it from getting too hot.
