Question:
Will rust reformer work?
What?

There's a rust spot on my fender that I'm planning to fix. The paint must have flaked off years ago and the rusty surface had been allowed to turn quite rough, but there's no rust-through so far. At some point in the past, the previous owner or the dealer had painted over the rust with black paint or used rust converter, but without proper prep and repainting.

From what I can see, the rust has developed pretty deep. What I'd like to know is: will sanding the top surface (not to bare metal because I'm not sure how much there is left to work with) and applying rust reformer attack the rust below the surface? What I'm concerned about is that the reformer will only convert the surface it's exposed to and leave the rusty metal below untreated. Will the reformer work through the surface or inhibit what's underneath from developing or will what's there continue to rust away? I don't have the means to sand or grind to metal or to weld so converter seems to be the only possibility for me at the moment.

Rust reformer or converters are the same thing. Yes, it will work as long as you coat any rusted areas completely and the converter merely converts the top layer of rust and prevents oxygen from reaching lower microscopic layers...any area not protected from getting oxygen will continue to rust which is why it's critical to completely cover any exposed metal/rust. Sand down as much as possible to get rid of loose material and try sanding a little around the edges of the spot to bare metal. Apply the converter so it overlaps onto paint. POR-15 and Rust Bullet are two quality products ....check with local hardware stores or auto paint suppliers in your area.

It may be cheapest(and definately fastest) to just replace the fender.

Otherwise rust must be completely cut or ground away.

If any rust is left, it will continue to eat away the metal.

Converters do not penetrate deeply so rusting proceeds under them.

The only thing which might penetrate rust is a thin oil. You can't paint over oil, but you could re-oil it twice a year. Used motor oil is sometimes used this way.

Normally, godparents do not have an important place in a wedding. Or does this couple already have children, and they are honoring you as they are the grandparents? You don't have to match rust, just wear a color that will blend in. Find a paint chip that is the color of the rust in the wedding. Take this with you and find a dress in a pretty shade of blue or green that will go with it.

Reformer and converter are the same product.

They will work as claimed on rather shallow rust. Before using it,sand and scrape away the loose rust. Then read and follow the instructions on the label.Once the product has thoroughly dried, lightly scuff sand the surface before priming and painting.Otherwise the new paint will not adhere to the dried converter.
