What causes water to get in the gas tank, and what are symptoms of it ??
The reason I ask is because we have gotten a lot of snow in the past week, freezing rain yesterday, and it rained all day today. My car seems to be running a little rough today and I am hoping that is all this is. Thank you ....

A gas tank that is low on feul and has been sitting for a long period of time can condensate and collect moisture.Gas getting water in it from freezing rain, snow, car wash ect. is unlikley unless ofcourse you dont have your cap on.Ask your local auto parts store for a bottle of alchohol a.k.a. "heat",pour the whole bottle in with a full tank.If you have a small amount of water in your tank that will take care of it.

Your car works buy combining the gas and a spark to make an explosion to send the piston up and down. The more water that is in your gas the smaller the explosion and if you have way to much water in the gas then the car will never start. If you have a little it will have a very rough idle and when you step on the gas from a stop the car will take for ever to get speed. I have no idea what year and model your car is but some cars just don't like damp weather. Good Luck !!

Under normal condition, water getting into the gas tank is unlikely to happen. If you have excessive amount of water in the gas, you car would be shuddering. A small amount of water in the gas would get frozen and clogs up the gas line. Put a bottle of gas line antifreeze in the gas tank to see what happen.

well, it would be next to impossible for water to get in there under normal conditions, there may be condensation forming however. this happens when your tank isnt full and it goes from warm to cold rapidly. a symptom of it is hard starting/ not starting, mis firing/ backfiring, skipping, and just all around running like crap.. if you think that may have happened, go to a convenience store and grab a bottle of dry gas and pour the whole bottle in the tank

That happens when you do not keep a full tank of gas.. I would buy some gas line antifreeze and dump that into your tank and then shake your vehicle to mix it up good and add more gas into your tank.. If that does not solve your problem. you will have to drain your tank and put fresh gas in.. I hope this helps you out.
