Steps to wash, polish and Wax a car?

I can't find any answers about steps for polish and waxing the car.

Can someone give a simple step 1 ~ step X for making my car shine?

Below is what I am guessing:
1. Garage the car (out of sun)
2. Hose off dirt
3. Wash with Carwash soap/detergent
4. Dry with clothes
5. Polish then Buff off
6. Wax then Buff off
7. Drive off like a mirror on the road

Am I missing anything? I am just so curious what's the difference between POLISH & WAXING. They sound just the same to me. Aren't they just the same white oily thing you rub into car's paint and buff off?

What does polish do?
What does wax do?
What does clay bar do?

Heaps of questions as I am getting a new car next week and wanting to know how to wash it or DIY paint protection on it.

Any Car Gurus, please help me out.

Thanks.

1: wash car: hopefully you already know that this does

2. clay car -this removes contaminants stuck to the paint, that normal washing wont get off. You can also clay your windows/wheels etc. I suggest meguiars smooth surface clay kit.

3. Paint cleaners(aka polishes): These remove oxidation/scratches/stains/etc. They have no protection at all. Different strengths for different paints. I suggest starting with Meguiars Swirlx, and if needed, then step up to Meguiars ultimate compound. Apply in a 16x16 in. section with a microfiber applicator. Work it in for about a minute and wipe off immediately with microfiber towel. Inspect results, repeat or move up to a more aggressive product.

4. Pure Polish: These help the paint shine by adding oils to the paint. But do not add protection either. Work best on darker colors and cars with single stage paints. But can still work good on lighter colored cars. Its really optional, since the paint cleaners mentioned above have polishing oils in them. But if you have single stage paint, then definitely use it. Use meguiars deep crystal polish, or their #7 polish. Just kind of message them into the paint, in a 16x16 in. section for about 40 seconds. then wipe off immediately. These can be a real pain to remove.

5: wax: locks in polish, adds protection and shine. Apply using microfiber applicator and spread a thin even layer all over your car, not getting any on plastic/vinyl/pourous surfaces ( itll stain). Let it dry to a haze (usually 15 minutes) then wipe off with microfiber towel. Suggest meguiars nxt 2.0 tech wax or their gold class wax.

and no

rotorys are only for professionals

you can easily burn through the paint if you have no clue what youre doing

if you want a buffer

get a DA buffer, they have a clutch on them which stops it from spinning if you put to much pressure on it and they spin in 2 directions, thus burning through the paint is harder

but then again, thatll still run you about 200 bucks..

and the guy above has no clue what hes talking about

Windows first... wheels last when washing. Let dry. Wax in shade, never in sun. Let wax turn a chalk white then buff off (shine) Enjoy the time with your car, learn its curves and lines. Overcast days have their advantages... they are also good to take photos of your car when your finished... or better, get someone to take photos as you are washing and waxing. Polish and waxing are somewhat the same. They will make your car shiny. The only difference is the medium of wax you use. The best wax i recommend for you to use is liquid wax, not the wax and clay bar because its easier to apply and remove. Your steps are somewhat okay already. I will just rephrase it.

1. You should clean your car in a covered place to avoid water marks

2. Wash your car with a quality car shampoo because it will not ruin you paint and it has a wax in itself.

3. Clean also the the tires and rims. Clean also the under fender to avoid rust.

4. Dry off with Kanebo towel to avoid scratches.

5. Let it dry for a while before putting liquid wax, you can put liquid wax on the mirrors, rims and the whole body of the car except rubber.

6. Let it dry for a while before removing it with clean and dry clothes.

You can notice that your car will be so shiny from the rims, mirrors and practically the whole car. Hope this helps!
