I have a 2003 Explorer. It suddenly started running real rough - like a couple spark plugs were out. I checked the wires to see if one had come off - not so easy! Went to Auto Zone and they checked the codes - sparks plugs misfiring and possible crankshaft position sensor. I changed all six plugs and then the sensor as well. Still runs the same. Any ideas?
I realized after I changed the sensor that I had not disconnected the battery before doing so - would this have killed the new one?

these same codes happened to me with my '02 chevy avalanche. My truck would run pretty rough when I first started it while idling, but get better as it warmed up, and the engine was throwing those same codes. It was the O2 sensors for me. Pretty easy fix. On vehicles made in the time of ours, the O2 sensors should be replaced every 100,000 miles. Mine were finally replaced at 200,000 miles and the thing ran like it was brand new in comparison.

it sounds like your timing belt/chain went out or jumped depending on mileage you should definitely get it replaced

It may be the ignition module or coil.
