R-134& R-12 don't mix! Purge System, Drain Compressor Oil, Change System Seals then the change can be done Safely.

Recharging an R12 system has become price prohibitive. If your old R12 system needs repair or has lost refrigerant, the timing could be right for you to convert your system from R12 to R134a.All it takes is a retrofit kit like the one you bought. You have to remove all the R12 refrigerant from the system first then you can add the new R134a refrigerant.Generally the process calls for the removal of the oil refrigerant, installation of new fittings and a new label and the addition of either a PAG or Ester lubricant as well as the R134a refrigerant. The higher pressure of R134a was believed at one time to cause compressor failure. It was later found that by using 15 to 20 percent less R134a, operating pressures would remain essentially the same as R12 and not require a new compressor. So a retrofit kit is the way to go.For more information about your vehicles a/c system click on the link below.

First off, since it is an older car, I would see if someone can still service the R-12 system. If you want to convert it or not, you need to have the old freon removed from the vehicle. They can also pressurize the system to see if it is leaking and where. If you want to convert the system, you can just get a kit from wal-mart and put the new fittings on the vehicle. You need to have the system pulled into a vacuum to get peak efficiency when you install the R-134. Since this is a '93, I wouldn't spend the money to replace the accumulator/drier and everything else.

there is a retrofit kit that allows you to put r 134a into an r 12 system. that would be the kit that you have. unless you have the equipment to vacuum and recharge the system your self then an ase certified shop should be able to do it no prob. so to answer your question yes r 134 a will work.

Some of the latest built R-12 systems can. But the older ones can't because of the different pressures. And a different oil is used so it might not be compatible with your compressor. Call an A/C service shop to be sure.
