Question:
04 Honda Civic Problems?

Can I replace the passenger side rearview mirror myself? How would I get the parts/about how much would it be? There is no power element to the mirrors.

Also, recently I tried to open the gas "flap"(?) but apparently the cord between the front seat and the trunk broke somehow and the dealer wants almost $200 to fix it. Is that a reasonable price? Is that something I can fix myself?

Thanks for reading, obviously neither problem affects driving, so I'm not really in any hurry to drop a lot of money on getting them fixed. But if I can do it myself for less, I will. :)

Side mirrors are very easy to replace. You just snap off the cover from the inside and remove the screws holding the mirror. They're available on ebay for about $32 (already includes shipping cost). Only buy from high rate sellers and without negative reputation.

If you need to get a whole new cord, you may find the whole switch and cord in ebay for just $22. At this price, $200 is a clear ripoff. There are no special heavy duty tools required to access the paneling from inside your car. Buy a honda civic service manual to get illustrations on where the bolts and nuts are located to access and fix your gas flap release cable.

Good luck!

There's a triangle shaped cover on the corner of the door at the end of the window and above the door cover. Pop it off and you'll have access to the bolts you need to remove the mirror. You can get a replacement mirror either at a salvage/junk yard used for reasonble price or the dealer ship. As far as the fuel door cord, you may want to let a shop replace it for you. It's can be difficult to remove the old cable and route the new one and you could accidentally damage the new one if you do it wrong!

no and no...

Unless you have extensive knowledge of cars, I would not advise fixing them yourself... the mirror replacement requires you to remove the inside panel of the door, to get to 3 bolts that hold the mirror on... getting the mirror off is the easy part, getting to those 3 bolts will take you at least an hour or two, depending on how hard it is to get the side of the door off and how handy you are... the gas tank lid latch is far more complicated than you think, you need to rewire it, with a new metal line, which requires you to pull the carpet up, I'd suggest going to the dealer to do both or another shop that does that sort of work, around where I live the hourly rate to go to a dealer is about what it is to go to an independent shop so it wouldnt matter where you went here.

Your best bet for another mirror would be a salvage yard. You might be able to get another gas door cable there too, but price the job around first. I bet an independent place can do it for a whole lot less than $200.

Installation instructions can be found at www.autozone.com > Repair Info > Vehicle Repair Guides. You can also pick up a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual at an auto parts store.
