Both 4 stroke, with inlet and exhaust valves.

Both can be fuel injected - though petrol engines often use carburetors instead (as most motorcycles)

Main difference is ignition-

petrol engines use a spark to ignite the air/fuel mix.

diesels use the heat of compression to ignite the air/fuel mix - some use glow plugs.

Gas engines except for rotary: Use 4 cycles to run an engine and a spark plug to ignite the gas on the power stroke just after its compression stroke.

Diesel Engines: Used same 4 cycles to run a engine but no spark plug. they use compression as heat to fire off the diesel fuel. Smaller diesel engines use glow plugs to pre warm the cyclinder to create heat.

Diesel engine vehicles are more costly than that of Petrol engine vehicles. The impurity level of Diesel is quite high and diesel vehicles are making more environmental pollution. Maintenance of diesel engine is more than that of petrol engine. Petrol vehicle parts are more costly than that of diesel vehicle parts.
