Are LED headlight replacements illegal in Australia?

Hi,

I have a 1994 Suzuki Sierra and i currently have semi sealed H4 Narva headlight upgrades with the upgrade bulbs and i have noticed the awesome light u can get from an LED light bar and i have seen these Speakers custom LED headlights in america. However i am not sure if these LED upgrade headlights from people like speakers are legal in Australia? I do know that HID headlight upgrade kits are not illegal but here in the NT the cops are booking people for having too bright of headlights with HID kits. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

yes. because the geometry of the HID lamp requires different optics, and your beam pattern will be wrong. However a 35W HID emits 2800 lm as compared to a 55W halogen lamp - 1600 lm.



LEDs are great for sidelights etc but cr*p for headlights because the light emitting area is just too big, so they cant be accurately focussed. Also they arent reliable because if they get too hot they burn out. LEDs generally must be operated at or below a junction temperature of 125°

Compare that with the operating temperature of a tungsten filament - 3600°

Any exchange from factory standards is technically no longer legal. Until your 02 Camaro got here from the manufacturing unit with LED bulbs, they are not legal. To discover for certain, seem at the box they got here in. Do you see the phrases "DOT accredited"? If not they are not legal. Do you see the words "For off street use only"? If that is so they don't seem to be authorized.
