36mm is 36mm. Use metric tools on metric bolts and Imperial measure"SAE" on SAE bolts or you round them. Domestic US made car brands still use SAE. Asian and European use Metric.

Otherwise get an adjustable crescent wrench.

Some bolt sizes do not have a close enough size in the other wrench measure to be used without damaging the bolt or nut.

Lots of good factual answers, but I am wondering where you are going with this. That is one massive bolt and is probably going to require more torque than you can apply with a wrench. It is about twice the head size of the crankshaft bolts we use impact wrenches on. Certainly, at that size you must not use the nearest inch size - it will round the head for sure.

If we understood this job more we could help more.

You also need to know the thread pitch and whether it's a metric bolt or just that a 36mm wrench fits the head of the bolt.

Use software to convert mm to inches

Use decimal equivelent chart to convert the .4173 portion to a fraction

so it is between 1 -13/32 and 1-27/64 so I'd try what Bertsta has said use a 1-7/16 which is a little bigger but may work.

1 and 13/32 ". Or 1.417", exactly.

If you had a tape measure in 32nds, it would read one

"line" under 1 7/16".

Should just buy a 36 mm wrench. I needed a deep 7/8" for an airplane spark plug; I could only get a 22 mm but, then, it is a plug for an aluminum head. Not a bolt that may require 60 ft/lbs or more as yours probably does.

EDIT: I seriously Doubt your bolt says : "36mm". It probably says 3.6 Grade. I have never seen a screw called out by its shank, head size, nor thread pitch. Not even for aircraft. Just codes for alloy, hardness, and/or an AN number

.

EDIT 2: Yes, you COULD have a 36mm head bolt in a truck or even motorcycle axle. My Harley R axle has a 1 1/16" ( 28mm) head, but shank Size is about 3/4". Your "36 mm" is probably 24mm or one inch. It could even have an oversize head and is about 3/4", also, or, you are measuring a flange, not across flats. Auto and Aircraft mfrs build all kindsa proprietary fasteners.

Bolts are specified by the thread diameter and thread pitch. You do not have a 36 mm bolt in a car.

Making reference to the size of the hex head of the bolt has nothing to do with the bolt size. Maybe you simply need a 36 mm hex socket or wrench to loosen/tighten/hold the bolt.

To buy a socket or wrench, you buy a 36 mm socket or wrench.

Now, regarding your actual question. There are 25.4 mm per inch. So,

36 ÷ 25.4 = 1.417 inches.

If you want to buy the closest equivalent English size, it's 1⁷/₁₆", which is 1.437 inches.

On a tape measure that shows 16ths of an inch divisions, 36 mm is between

1³/₈" and 1⁷/₁₆"

A 36 mm wrench would fit fairly well on a 1³/₈" hex. I don't know of any American bolt with that size hex head, but my old house has some plumbing fittings that require a 1³/₈" wrench or socket.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do.

36mm is 1.417inches or just under 1 7/16

but if you need to buy a wrench, just buy a 36mm

You can easily find that out by typing "36 mm inches" in your browser search window. The answer is 1.417. Depending on how accurately you measured, that's 1 - 13/32 or 1- 27/64 or 1 - 7/16
