I saw a SUV today. It left front wheel was sitting horizontal under the wheel well of the car. Everyone was OK, did not see any damage to the vehicle. Just wondering; what makes the front wheel fall off?

outside of the answer they may have been changing the tire and used it to hold the car up? if a upper or lower ball joint broke it can cause the wheel assembly to go up under the front of the car.

One thing I have seen is way over tightened wheel nuts. This stretches the studs and weakens the hell out of them. Once they start to break, they all go at once.

they were probably changing the tire...if not that, the car would most likely have a lot of damage to it.
