I have an Automatic 2006 mustang v6. 55k miles.

Lately, when i'm trying to reverse, and change the gear to "R", my car kind of gets stuck for like 2-4 seconds before actually reversing, and when it does go on reverse, it does it reverse roughly.

thanks for your help.

checked the trans fluid level lately? you describe a

sign of slipping like there isn't enough fluid in the

reservoir.....or it could be a software issue that isn't

getting the message to the trans properly.

you can call thelocal ford garage and ask if there are

any service bulletins on your model regarding trans

problems/slippage/adjustments needed to cure, etc..

your vin # will tell them if any apply to your car

CHeck the Fluids. you might nd to get a shop to do a relearn on it. this will reset the CVI's ( clutch volume index. as a transmission wares over time the gap that the clutches have to move gets greater. The computer is suppose to learn these changes and compensate on it's own. but if you don't reverse often per trip. then this index might not be learned on it's own. the computer needs to see these values repeat 3 times per consecutive trip before it sets the parameters. so if you reverse less then that per trip. the computer might never learn them. you can also try to force a relearn by disconnection your batter overnight. then the next time you drive the car go someplace and put it into reverse and drive over and over again. do this on 3 different occasions within a week. and that might result in a successful relearn. because having a shop force a CVI reset is expensive. mostly because the computer that dose this cost about 10 grand. so they charge about 100 to 150 bucks to do this simple procedure which takes all of 30 seconds. the other possibility is the transmission is simply worn out. the first signs of this is a hard shift in low reverse. this effects reverse and the shift from 2nd to 3rd. both of these shifts will feel off. if this is the case you might need to start saving your pennies. transmissions ware out just like brakes. they have friction material inside of them. multiple clutch packs. they do have a shelf life. usually about 100,000 to 150,000 miles. when is the last time you have a trans flush?? that might be something you should do if you haven't had one in a wile. however. say no to a trans flush if you never ever had one. after a certain point it wont help. if the transmission is old and worn out then the old thick dirty fluid actually helps it produce the friction it needs to work. the goal is to keep the fluid clean though flushes every 60,000 miles so this doesn't happen in the first place. But after a certain point, the damage is done and a flush might actually make it worse. i know that is counter intuitive but transmissions are very sensitive pieces of equipment. Fluid alone can greatly change the structural integrity of the internal parts. anyways. check the fluids. consult the manual on how to properly do that. some cars need to be in neutral with the engine on. others in park. others engine off. so consult the manual on how to properly check it. add ATF4 as needed. look around for any leaks. trans fluid is red. assuming it's clean. beyond that it's a job for a mechanic.

low fluid or the transmission is on its way out. i knew it was a ford or dodge before clicking on this question. dude wtf are you talking about not reversing often enough on a trip will make that happen and you're a master tech from where an online school? its a damn ford they are not reliable when it comes to transmission and no transmission is flushed its only done after a rebuild or new transmission is installed and its the cooler that gets flushed. 25 year mechanic and transmission rebuilder
