Question:
Fiat Punto Battery Problem?

My next door neighbour has a Y Reg Fiat Punto 5 door 1.2L (not sure which MK ??) and is having a problem with the battery going flat overnight. She has replaced the battery with an approved new one and had it checked over, also the altenator has been checked by 3 different mechanics and it shows optimum output. There doesn't appear to be any visual wire damage (superficial check) and the car is in general good nick. This problem is very erratic, she can run from one week to the next and all is ok then go out the next morning and it's completely flat. This isn't connected to rain shorting something out as it happens in dry and wet weather, any help or suggestions would be appreciated as she is worried about it packing up, she can't afford big garage fees so I thought I would ask here first.
Thanks

Buy a battery terminal that has a plastic nut on the top of it. Fit it to the battery and just loosen it when you are not driving it, this will disconnect the battery when the car is not being driven. And no power can draw off when it is disconnected. This terminal just makes it easier to disconnect battery power. It is not expensive. And a cheap way to try and diagnose the problem. When she gets to work and at night loosen the terminal to disconnect battery, so it should start next time as no power should draw off . Then just tighten it back up when you are ready to start and drive the car. A parts shop will have one and easy to fit. shop will tell you how. Now you do not want to do this for ever, but if you do this for a while it will let you know that their is some thing switched on even though the ignition is off. The other person said it can be boot light etc. But some times it can take a while to work out what it is. Also make sure radio is turned off etc, but may have to remove clock fuse. And then in the dark disconnect the batter terminal wait for a few seconds then just touch the terminal onto the battery terminal. If it has a short or something still on you will see a small spark, this is the current that it is drawing. ( it is easier to see spark in the dark.)The clock should be the only thing that draws current when turned off. That is why I say find clock fuse and take it out. The car may still be able to be driven with the clock not going, unless it is on a circuit with other things like indicators etc.But if you can do this you should get no spark. If you do then this can tell you that current is being drawn off when it should not. Then you have to find out what is drawing this current . And that should tell you what is causing the battery going flat. Good luck.

1. There is something staying on - like a boot or glove box light with an erratic switch.

2. There may be a fault with the alternator- its could charge ok but the diodes are bad, letting the battery discharge back through the alternator.

If the stereo replace into enjoying and your then took your key out the ignition, does the stereo turn off? If no longer it seems that like whoever put in it did no longer cord the stereo's power by using a switched stay. regularly autos use a widely used connector talked approximately as an ISO plug which makes it incredibly ordinary to get all of the needed wires linked up, yet possibly the Punto would not use one and so issues are no longer linked good. if this is so which you will would desire to examine which cord at the back of the stereo replace into the unique switched stay for the familiar stereo and refer to your new stereo's training to be sure which of its terminals is the ability enter.

You need to check that everything is off When car is parked up, favourite is the boot light staying on. Not sure if you have folding seat in rear, if yo do leave a section open to check.

The battery is shorting out somewhere, that is the only possible explanation (or your friend got two dud batteries)
