I've had one in my 1992 Crown Victoria for 50K miles and I believe test data shows more air flowing through the K&N versus a conventional pleated paper filter. However, the pleated paper filter may do a better filtering job depending on what brand it is and what the relative "loading" is on each filter type. A filter actually filters better as it becomes loaded with particles as long as your getting a good air flow and the air is not bypassing the filter because of excessive blockage of the filter element. The oiling procedure will affect the K&N performance so it should be followed closely, especially since they're finding that if it's over oiled, you can contaminate your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor with an oil film that doesn't get burned off when the MAF cleans itself. New MAF sensor spray cleaners (CRC brand for one) are now available to clean the delicate MAF sensor element. Some cars use Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) air density controls instead of a MAF, and would not have this problem.

I found it helps the gas mileage a little bit and i have 2 K&N Filters one in my f150 and the other in my plymouth minivan , one thing it does do is give you a little boost in horsepower and you dont have to replace filters every 3k miles you just clean out the k&n and re-oil it.
as far as i know you dont have to do anything to the computer in the car after installing it
