Question:
Painting a car a different color?

I am buying a 1967 Impala to restore. There is some repairs to do to the car to make it look better such as getting it completely repainted.

It still has its original paint without touch ups but its showing its age.

The original color is a light blue but I am thinking on getting it painted "Tuxedo Black" when I am done fixing it up.

I don't care about the matching codes or anything like that. I just care about it looking good.

Howmuch would it be to get the car painted completely so it looks like it was always black? Would it cost less (and howmuch roughly) if I do alot of prep work myself? Such as sand blasting the paint off, removing trimming and so on?

anything you can do will save you a little money as thats not time being charged by the body shop, you want to change colors so that will cost you extra as there is a lot more work involved, if all they have to do is prime it and shoot it with color your probably looking at $3,500 to get it done but it all depends on the body shop and what their rates are, I just had my 67 chevelle painted last summer and they had to install a new quarter and wheel well and part of the trunk and a patch on the drivers fender and it was repainted black after they stripped it to bare metal and my total bill was around $6,500.

The cost of the paint job you want is dictated by the amount of work you put into this project. Disassemble everything that you want to look good. Start with removing the front clip (hood, fenders, bumper and trim). To have really nice door jambs, the doors need to be removed. Most car manufacturers carry the body color into anything that opens, keep that in mind. Would you want somebody to open the black door and see a light blue jamb ? Same goes for the trunk.

Use the best quality materials that you can afford. Don't skimp ! If you do, it will show. Preferably remove any rust if it is present with a new panel. Repairs can be made but sometimes rust is hard to remove. If you do not have any/much body repair or paint experience consider hiring it done. Offer to be of any assistance with any of the tasks at hand. Ask if you can be present when the paint is appplied. Two sets of eyes can be better than one.

I had a 2-door mustang and paid 1200. for an excellent pain job. The thing to consider is the quality of paint. Be careful in changing the color of your car. Lots of the time, the paint will chip off along the edge of the hood, bumper, and behind the wheels and your old color will come through. Not much you can do about this. You being in GA, depending on your location, insects can cause this too. Believe me, in south LA, bugs will kill a paint job. Also, be sure to get a warranty and get it in writing along with getting your estimates in writing too. Ask some local friends if they know of a good paint shop, but still use common sense and be careful.

Well entrodude, your questions provide just enough info to require me, or any expert, to ask you more questions.

Like: What are your expectations of the finished car. Nice driver?

Show car? Somewhere in between? Frame on? Frame off?

Yes, it is possible that you can minimize the impact on your budget by doing some of the work yourself. Example...remove every part that you don't want painted..inside and out.

You do not want to get involved in blasting the body, leave this part to the experts. The body can be severely damaged during the blasting process.

I would recommend that you decide on what is most important to you.

Price or quality? Is time involved important? (a frame off job can take a year or more)

A frame off job could cost you 10's of thousands of dollars.

Once you have your budget and desires set, put your energy into finding an appropriate shop willing to work within your needs. This is very important no matter if you decide to spend mega-bucks or a thousand.

You opened a big "can of worms", huh?

Probably save half of total cost.Remove whatever you feel confortable with being able to put back on.But unless you want to replace all the weather stripping and water proofing materials, don't sand blast!!
